What actually makes a speaker easy to hire… and easy to rehire?

In this candid conversation, NSA NYC welcomes Kat Ortiz of NextUp, the leader behind the organization’s CAU virtual programming and Rising Stars leadership experience.

Kat has hired countless speakers across virtual and live events and has a rare perspective on what separates speakers who get passed over from the ones buyers trust with bigger stages, higher visibility, and repeat opportunities.

Hosted by Cait Donovan, this masterclass will pull back the curtain on:
    • How speaker buyers actually evaluate presenters
    • What immediately creates confidence… or concern
    • The difference between being “good virtually” and being ready for a live stage
    • What speakers unknowingly do that makes buyers avoid rehiring them
    • How professionalism, communication, flexibility, and stage presence affect repeat bookings
    • What Kat looks for when deciding who moves from virtual events into larger in-person opportunities
If you’ve ever wondered what happens after you submit your materials… this is the conversation.

Introducing SpeakUP: The Gym for Your Speaking Career

    From Concept to Community.

What started as a pilot at Pier 57 has officially evolved. Based on your direct feedback and our recent co-creation sessions, we are thrilled to formally launch SPEAKUP—a dedicated, members-only program designed to bridge the gap between learning the craft and mastering the stage.

SPEAKUP is the "doing" space for speakers who are ready to stop planning and start performing.

    What SPEAKUP Delivers:

    • A Place for More (and Longer) Reps Consistent opportunities to practice and refine long-form content. These sessions are captured simply on your phone, providing you with immediate, usable footage of your progress.

    • A Feedback-Rich Environment Get real-time, constructive input from a trusted circle of peers and experienced speakers as you test new material, evolve your core message, or navigate a pivot.

    • Built-in Accountability No more working in a vacuum. Regular check-ins and a consistent cohort keep you in motion, ensuring you follow through on the goals you’ve set for your business.

    • A Strong Community Layer A true cohort experience. You aren't just practicing; you’re growing alongside a dedicated group that provides support, connection, and collective momentum.

    What SPEAKUP Is NOT:

To ensure this program serves its specific purpose, it’s important to define its boundaries:

    • It is NOT a curriculum-based training program. We aren't here to lecture; we’re here to work.

    • It is NOT a step-by-step guide on building a business. This is about the execution of the art.

    • It is NOT a replacement for SpeakerU. > Think of it this way: SpeakerU is where you learn the strategy, skills, and business of speaking. SPEAKUP is where you show up, put in the reps, and apply it.

The Champion’s Code: How to Generate Momentum and Grow Your Speaking Business Through Good Times and Bad WITH ROSS BERNSTEIN

The best-selling author of nearly 50 sports books, Ross consistently speaks at over 100 events per year and has even keynoted conferences on all seven continents. He’s a solopreneur who has built a lifestyle business with no employees or assistants, which allows him to travel nonstop with his wife and daughter. He purely keynotes and doesn’t have other profit centers, so he’s laser focused on booking gigs. In this session, Ross will peel back the curtain and share the inside secrets on how he’s built his business by building relationships, negotiating win-win deals, and ultimately just doing things very differently.

In this session you will discover:

    • Innovative ways to give and receive referrals, not just to your fellow speakers, but to your clients.
    • How to leverage video testimonials, philanthropy, and social media in order to grow your business.
    • Ideas on creative negotiations in order to find “Value” when clients don’t have your “full fee.”
    • Methods to be more creative in your sales pitches, your customization, and how to create “slump-busters” in order to keep your calendar full.
    • Ideas on pre and post gig networking that could hopefully lead to more international travel and lifestyle destinations.

You can have a great story, decades of experience, and incredible stage presence and still struggle to get booked if your pitch doesn't answer one simple question:

    ""Why should we choose you?""
Every year, conference designers, event planners, speaker bureaus, podcast hosts, editors, and media producers review thousands of pitches. Most are quickly forgotten. A few stand out.

    Why?
In this highly interactive NSA NYC workshop, conference designer and Gateway Gathering & Pitch Fest founder Jacquelyn Fletcher Johnson pulls back the curtain on what happens behind the scenes when designers choose their speaker line-up.

Jacquelyn has spent her career helping powerful ideas find their way into the world. She began as a publicist for bestselling authors Maurice Sendak and Clive Cussler, crafting pitches and securing media opportunities that amplified their work. Since then, she's served as a magazine editor-in-chief and designed large-scale conferences. She's currently the producer of the Gateway Gathering & Pitch Fest, an event that gathers powerful decision-makers—including literary and speaking agents, producers, meeting planners, editors, and the head of TED Conferences—who can open doors to bigger stages and opportunities.

She's reviewed thousands of speaker proposals, media pitches, story ideas, and keynote descriptions and has seen firsthand why some speakers get selected and others get overlooked.

    In this session, we'll explore:
    • What conference designers, gatekeepers, and decision-makers are really looking for
    • Why some speaker pitches get immediate attention while others are lost in the crowd
    • The role of ""sticky"" ideas in generating referrals, bookings, media opportunities, and word-of-mouth buzz
    • Common mistakes that weaken speaker brands
